Old Town Market Square
Darłowo
Details

Old Town Market Square

The Market Square is the central square of Darłowo, known as Plac Kościuszki. What strikes the eye here is the Town Hall, standing next to the Gothic St. Mary’s Church. The Town Hall is a former market hall, thoroughly rebuilt as the seat of the municipal authorities after the old Town Hall was completely burnt down in a great fire in 1722. The interior has no historical furnishings, but the Renaissance portal hanging above the entrance, rescued from the old Town Hall, is worth mentioning. It depicts the town’s coat of arms – a griffin with a fish tail and a Latin inscription.

St. Mary’s Church, St. Gertrude’s Church, St. George’s Church
Darłowo

Details

St. Mary’s Church, St. Gertrude’s Church, St. George’s Church

Three medieval churches that remain until our times.
The most valuable monuments of St. Mary’s Church: an elaborately carved Renaissance ambo from 1684,
four Baroque paintings from the first half of the 18th century,
six portraits of the apostles from the late 17th century,
a Renaissance baptismal bowl from the 16th century,
a Baroque crucifix and tabernacle from the 17th century,
Baroque seating (benches) from the 17th century,
a brass chandelier with an angel from the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries,
an organ prospectus from 1853, sarcophagi of Pomeranian dukes: Eric I, Elisabeth, wife of the last Pomeranian duke Boguslaw XIV, who died in 1653, and Jadwiga, wife of Ulric, brother of Boguslaw XIV).

St. Gertrude’s Church is the only building of this type in Poland – built in Scandinavian Gothic style on a hexagonal plan, with an external twelve-cornered aisle. Inside the church you can admire the starry vault, the frescoes of St. Gertrude – the patron saint of sailors – and the emblems of the guild of brewers and shoemakers. The windows were modelled on the portholes of ships.

St. George’s Church is another unusual church. It is not so much its architectural style, but its uniqueness relates to the place where it was built, i.e. outside the walls of the city of Darłowo. The reason was concern for the safety of the townsfolk as the church served as a hospital.
